Meta & CarbonBuild partner to cut emissions in concrete industry

Meta (formerly Facebook Inc.) and CarbonBuilt have announced a strategic collaboration aimed at accelerating the adoption of CarbonBuilt’s technology to significantly cut emissions in the hard-to-abate concrete industry. This partnership will allow CarbonBuilt to upgrade additional plants and scale up the production of its low-cost, low-carbon Reversa® binder more rapidly, fostering quick adoption and making a substantial environmental impact.

CarbonBuilt’s technology enables its clients to reduce their carbon footprint by as much as 70 percent compared to industry standards without compromising on price, performance, or operational efficiency. The low-carbon Reversa binder reacts with and permanently stores CO2 during the curing process, effectively displacing carbon-intensive cement in concrete production. By implementing this technology at existing concrete plants, CarbonBuilt offers a viable path toward meaningful decarbonisation of an industry responsible for approximately 8 percent of global emissions.

“Everyone agrees that we need more immediate and significant reductions in CO2 emissions if we are to bend the carbon curve. All meaningful solutions in the cement and concrete space require some type of infrastructure change, and making them happen fast requires that market participants can secure an attractive return on their investment of financial and human capital. Our collaboration with Meta will help accelerate the scale-up of our ambitious, here-now technology,” said Rahul Shendure, CEO of CarbonBuilt.

John DeAngelis, Head of Clean Technology Innovation at Meta said, “Meta is prioritising a multifaceted approach to accelerating decarbonisation in hard-to-abate sectors like concrete. Our collaboration with CarbonBuilt will help them to deliver a step-change reduction in emissions with a clear near-term path to scale. Accelerating the deployment of these types of solutions is critical for driving deep decarbonization and we hope this collaboration can help pave the path for others to do the same.”

Since 2020, Meta has maintained net-zero emissions across its global operations, achieving a 94% reduction in emissions from a 2017 baseline, and has committed to achieving net-zero emissions throughout its value chain by 2030.
