OMV has confirmed plans to invest a mid-three-digit million-euro sum in a new green hydrogen plant in Bruck an der Leitha, Lower Austria. The project involves the construction of a 140 MW electrolysis facility, contingent on a favourable outcome in the European and Austrian Hydrogen Bank auctions.
The plant is expected to produce up to 23,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, positioning it among the largest in Europe. OMV estimates the project could cut carbon emissions by approximately 150,000 tonnes per year—roughly equivalent to the annual footprint of 20,000 people.
Scheduled to begin operations by the end of 2027, the facility will use renewable energy from wind, solar, and hydro sources to generate green hydrogen. It will help supply the Schwechat refinery and contribute to decarbonising fuel and chemical production processes.
The project builds on experience gained from OMV’s existing 10 MW electrolyser, completed in 2024 in partnership with Kommunalkredit. That facility was one of the first in Europe to be certified as Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) under the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive.
