Only 2% of companies earn top marks in CDP’s 2024 environmental ratings

CDP has scored a record 22,777 companies for environmental performance in 2024, reflecting growing momentum for corporate transparency and sustainability action. Despite the surge in disclosures, only 2%—a total of 515 companies—secured an A rating, underlining the continued challenge of achieving top-tier recognition.

The 2024 assessment was the first under CDP’s unified corporate questionnaire, designed to streamline reporting and enhance comparability across environmental domains. The data revealed increases in the number of companies achieving A scores across key focus areas: 462 firms were rated A on climate change, 133 on water security, and 26 on deforestation.

Compared to 2023, the number of companies scored rose from 21,115 to 22,777, and A-rated companies increased from 396 to 515. While this indicates progress, the overall percentage remained steady at 2%, suggesting that while more firms are disclosing, few are meeting the rigorous standards required for top marks.

CDP noted that companies earning A scores outperformed peers in the stock market over the past decade by an average of 6%, reinforcing the financial benefits of transparency and environmental leadership.

CDP CEO Sherry Madera commented: “The companies on CDP’s A List are setting the pace. They are weaving environmental stewardship into their governance, strategy, and operations, and embracing transparency as a tool for growth. Their leadership is a blueprint for the economy we need.”

With increasing pressure from investors, regulators, and consumers for reliable environmental data, CDP’s findings highlight a growing recognition that environmental risk is financial risk—and that proactive disclosure is essential for business resilience and long-term value creation.
