Renewable energy company Iberdrola has received environmental approval from the Portuguese government to set up the country’s largest wind farm in northern Portugal.
The new wind farm having a capacity of 274 MW, will able to support the annual consumption of 128,000 homes.
The construction work will start in early 2025 and it will be incorporated into the Tâmega hydropower complex, one of the largest hydroelectric projects completed in Europe in the last 25 years. The wind farm will utilise the same grid connection as the Tâmega pumped-storage hydro complex, maximising the capacity of the connection point.
“The two technologies will complement each other to maximise output and production, optimising the electric infrastructure,” the company said in a press release.
Iberdrola also said they will implement a range of measures to support ecosystems in the wind farm location. These will include some of the initiatives already in place at the Tâmega complex such as planting native species and forest management.
