Repsol begins power generation at Chile’s largest wind farm to date

Repsol has commenced electricity production at Antofagasta Phase 1, its largest wind farm to date and one of the biggest in Chile. Situated in the Taltal district of the Antofagasta region, the facility boasts an installed capacity of 364 megawatts (MW) and marks the company’s first wholly developed renewable energy project in the country.

Constructed over 19 months with an investment nearing €400 million, the wind farm is expected to enter full commercial operation in the coming weeks. Once operational, it will produce approximately 750 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually—enough to meet the average consumption of 220,000 Chilean households.

The company is already planning a second phase in the same region, Antofagasta Phase 2, which will add a further 450 MW to Repsol’s growing renewable energy portfolio.

Previously, Repsol entered the Chilean renewables market through a 50:50 joint venture with Ibereólica Renovables Group, operating the Cabo Leones III (188 MW) and Atacama (166 MW) wind farms in the Huasco province. However, both Antofagasta phases are wholly owned by Repsol, reflecting the Spanish energy group’s deepening commitment to independent renewable development.

Renewable generation is a key pillar of Repsol’s broader energy transition strategy. The company currently operates nearly 4,000 MW of renewable capacity and maintains a global pipeline of 60,000 MW across various stages of development.
