RWE & Port of Setúbal partner for floating offshore wind energy growth

RWE has announced a collaboration with the Port Authority of Setúbal to enhance the port’s infrastructure and support Portugal’s growing ambitions in the floating offshore wind energy sector. The partnership aims to use shared expertise to foster industrial growth, positioning the port as a key hub for large-scale offshore wind projects.

Through a newly signed Letter of Support, RWE and the Port of Setúbal will explore the port’s potential to serve as an industrial centre for marshalling, assembling, and deploying key components of floating offshore wind projects. This move is designed to support Portugal’s industrialisation goals while strengthening the country’s floating wind capabilities, with potential for expanding to international markets.

Álvaro de Miguel, Country Lead for RWE Offshore Wind in Portugal, highlighted the strategic importance of the collaboration and said, “Portugal is well-positioned to become a key market in the floating offshore wind sector. We support the Port of Setúbal’s goal to become a logistics hub for floating wind projects. Enhancing port capacity and supply chains is crucial for the successful deployment of commercial-scale projects. This will create opportunities to attract investment, spur growth, and generate skilled employment.”

Carlos Correia, Chairman of the Board at the Port Authority of Setúbal added, “Our sustainable development strategy is clearly outlined and aims to make the Port of Setúbal a HUB2GREEN, transforming this port into an economic hub for sustainable development projects in areas such as biofuels, offshore wind, bio-industry, and sustainable ship repair. We are proud that RWE supports us in our development to become a logistical hub for floating offshore wind.”

Portugal, with its favourable wind conditions and deep waters, is preparing for its first offshore wind auction. The Portuguese government has already positioned floating offshore wind as the preferred technology for future energy development and undertaken preparatory work to secure floating offshore wind development rights.
