Sandoz joins multi-buyer renewable power agreements in Europe

Sandoz has joined two new multi-buyer virtual Power Purchase Agreements (vPPAs) in Europe alongside nine strategic suppliers, as part of efforts to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. The agreements are structured under the Energize programme, which is managed by Schneider Electric and aggregates electricity demand from healthcare and pharmaceutical companies to support new renewable energy projects.

Lynn De Proft, Chief Procurement Officer at Sandoz, said: “This step reflects our commitment to operate responsibly and promote renewable electricity. By joining the Energize cohorts, we aim to contribute to a more sustainable healthcare system.”

The move follows a vPPA signed by Sandoz in 2025, which the company said is expected to cover nearly 90% of its current electricity demand across European operations. The new agreements are intended to further reduce indirect (Scope 2) emissions and enable selected suppliers to access renewable electricity.

Healthcare systems and regulators are placing increasing emphasis on sustainability performance and emissions reduction plans across supply chains. Companies participating in the Energize programme said the initiative supports collaborative decarbonisation efforts.

Uta Steffen-Holderbaum, Head of Sustainability at Gerresheimer Group, said: “Our commitment to sustainability includes ambitious targets: a 52% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions compared to 2019 and sourcing 100% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Partnering in initiatives like Energize amplifies our ability to deliver on these goals while supporting our customers’ decarbonization journeys.”

Maureen Mazurek, Chief EHS and Sustainability Officer at Becton, Dickinson and Company, said: “Programs like Energize are essential for suppliers aiming to decarbonize and seeking practical pathways to get there. Working with Sandoz helps us align our efforts with customer expectations, while being part of the Energize consortium enables us to access renewable electricity and continue building internal capability. It’s a strong example of how collaboration drives real impact and supports our 2030 greenhouse gas emissions reduction target.”
