The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has invited automakers and auto parts manufacturers to pilot test its draft Automotive Sector Net-Zero Standard, a framework designed to guide the industry’s pathway to net-zero emissions by 2050.
The draft standard, which builds on SBTi’s Land Transport Guidance and aligns with the draft Corporate Net-Zero Standard V2, sets out sector-specific criteria for scopes 1, 2 and 3 emissions. It aims to provide a comprehensive approach for companies to establish greenhouse gas reduction targets in line with climate science.
Following a first round of public consultation, SBTi is refining the draft based on stakeholder feedback. The updated version will undergo pilot testing and a second consultation in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Pilot participants will test the standard using real-world data, helping to identify implementation challenges and validate methodologies. Their input will be used to ensure the final framework is both scientifically robust and practical across different operational and regional contexts.
SBTi is encouraging applications from companies across the automotive value chain, with submissions due by 12 September. Details of the pilot’s objectives, structure, timeline and selection criteria are included in the initiative’s published Terms of Reference.
