SBTi launches first global register of certified target-setting experts

The Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has unveiled the world’s first register of certified science-based target-setting experts, alongside the launch of its new e-learning platform, the SBTi Academy.

The register lists professionals who have completed a rigorous seven-part assessment, demonstrating advanced expertise in areas such as greenhouse gas inventory assessment and target modelling. These “SBTi Certified Experts” are expected to play a critical role in helping companies navigate the complexities of setting robust climate targets.

Certification was achieved through the SBTi Academy, which also offers nine hours of online training to sustainability practitioners at different stages of their careers. Divided into three hubs, the Academy provides tailored content: the Onboarding Hub offers free foundational training; the Practitioners’ Hub provides advanced modules on technical areas such as the GHG Protocol and corporate net-zero targets; and the Certification Hub assesses specialists, granting certification and a place on the SBTi’s official register.

The initiative comes as businesses worldwide face mounting pressure to manage climate risks and develop credible decarbonisation strategies. However, demand for green skills continues to outstrip supply, with global growth in demand for sustainability roles outpacing talent availability by more than double. Surveys suggest 76% of businesses cite early-stage skills as their biggest challenge, while 68% of sustainability leaders say they were “homegrown” rather than recruited for their expertise.

By offering structured training and certification, the SBTi aims to close this skills gap and enable companies to set science-based targets more effectively. Science-based targets, grounded in climate science, provide a credible roadmap for cutting emissions and embedding climate considerations into corporate strategy.

Tracy Wyman, Chief Impact Officer at SBTi, said: “While the appetite for science-based targets is growing, access to skills is a common barrier to target-setting. By providing foundational knowledge for those just setting out on their own sustainability journey and certification for experts already helping companies decarbonise, the SBTi Academy aims to bridge the skills gap to set companies up for success.”
