Seven firms pilot nature risk reporting using GRI and TNFD frameworks

Seven multinational companies have shared their experiences assessing nature-related impacts, risks, and opportunities in a new set of case studies jointly released by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD).

The case studies, published as part of ongoing collaboration between GRI and TNFD, provide practical examples of how publicly listed companies—including CDL, Ecopetrol, Enel, Iberdrola, JSW Steel, Reckitt, and Vale—are evaluating their dependencies and impacts on nature. They also illustrate how such assessments can reveal material financial risks and opportunities.

By applying GRI’s impact materiality lens alongside TNFD’s LEAP (Locate, Evaluate, Assess, Prepare) approach, the studies offer a model for integrating environmental factors into corporate risk management and reporting strategies. The findings underscore the importance of aligning disclosure standards and enhancing interoperability to support transparent and consistent nature-related reporting.

Élodie Chêne, Biodiversity Standard Lead at GRI, noted that while companies are improving in identifying nature-related risks, assessment methodologies for such risks remain less mature compared to those used for evaluating environmental dependencies and impacts.

To support broader adoption of aligned disclosure practices, the GRI Academy has launched a new course, GRI-TNFD Interoperability: A Guide for Nature-Related Reporting, aimed at helping organisations meet growing stakeholder expectations around biodiversity and sustainability reporting.

The collaboration also includes the GRI-TNFD Interoperability Mapping Tool, designed to help GRI’s 14,000 global reporters align their practices with the TNFD recommendations and enhance overall sustainability disclosures.
