Shell Canada Products, a subsidiary of Shell plc has given the green light to the Polaris project, set within the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park at Scotford in Alberta, Canada. The project aims to capture 650,000 tonnes of CO2 annually from the Scotford refinery and chemicals complex.
Shell has also announced the Final Investment Decision (FID) for the Atlas Carbon Storage Hub in collaboration with ATCO EnPower which will provide secure underground storage for the CO2 captured by Polaris.
The Polaris project aims to reduce Scope 1 CO2 emissions at their Scotford refinery by capturing and storing up to 40%, and by up to 22% at the chemicals complex. CO2 captured by Polaris will be transported via a 22-kilometre pipeline to two storage wells at the Atlas Hub, where it will be securely stored approximately two kilometres underground in the Basal Cambrian Sands. The two projects are expected to become operational by late 2028.
