Singapore’s MPA and NYK partner to advance maritime sustainability

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) have formalised a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen their collaboration and accelerate efforts in maritime decarbonisation, digitalisation, and manpower development.

Aligned with the International Maritime Organization’s revised Greenhouse Gas Strategy 2023, the Paris Agreement, and global energy and climate targets, MPA and NYK will collaborate on a range of initiatives to promote sustainability within the maritime industry. This includes advancing the safe utilisation of maritime fuels such as biofuels, methanol, and low or zero-carbon ammonia through a phased approach.

The partnership will also encompass discussions on maritime training programmes tailored for seafarers handling ammonia-fuelled vessels, along with other skills and competencies crucial for supporting the industry’s shift towards alternative low or zero-carbon fuels. Additionally, leadership programmes will be designed for local professionals to drive sustainable practices forward.
