China’s Sinopec has announced an agreement with Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power to deliver engineering services for what is set to become the world’s largest integrated green hydrogen and green ammonia facility.
The project, to be constructed in Yanbu on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast, will harness wind and solar power to produce 400,000 metric tonnes of green hydrogen and 2.8 million tonnes of green ammonia annually, Sinopec confirmed on Tuesday.
Commercial operations are expected to begin in 2030, though financial details of the deal were not disclosed. Sinopec Engineering Group, a subsidiary of Sinopec, will take charge of front-end engineering design and will also oversee convertible engineering, procurement and construction for the development.
The agreement underscores the deepening energy ties between China and Saudi Arabia, while also marking a major step in global efforts to scale up clean hydrogen production for industrial and export markets.
