Sony sets green management 2030 targets to cut emissions and tackle plastic waste

Sony Group Corporation has announced its new Green Management 2030 (GM2030) medium-term environmental targets, covering the period from fiscal year 2026 to 2030. The initiative forms part of the company’s long-term “Road to Zero” plan, which aims to achieve a zero environmental footprint across all stages of its product lifecycle and business activities by FY2050.

The GM2030 targets build on the progress of Sony’s Green Management 2025 (GM2025) plan, under which the company expects to meet most of its objectives by the end of FY2024. The new framework introduces updated indicators and more ambitious goals, reflecting both lessons learned under GM2025 and the growing urgency of global environmental challenges.

Key Targets under GM2030

  • Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Sony has pledged to cut total Scope 1–3 emissions by more than 25% by FY2030 compared with FY2025 levels. This includes reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 60% and Scope 3 emissions by 25%. The group also aims to achieve 100% renewable electricity use across its operations by 2030, while encouraging suppliers of raw materials and components to do the same. Sony is targeting net zero across the value chain by FY2040.
  • Resource Circulation: The company plans to expand the use of circular materials in its products and improve recyclability. Targets include limiting the use of non-circular plastics to 30% or less by weight per product, using 100% recycled tin in solder for major printed circuit boards in specific models, and applying 100% recycled gold in circuit boards and other components.
  • Plastic Packaging: In a bid to curb plastic pollution, Sony has set new packaging goals. By 2030, plastic should account for no more than 10% of packaging, with the elimination of plastic packaging for products weighing 5kg or less and at Sony Group retail stores.

Beyond operations, Sony also intends to leverage its entertainment content and partnerships with artists to raise environmental awareness and promote the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Sony has joined the RE100 initiative, pledging to source 100% renewable electricity for its global operations by 2030. Its net-zero targets have been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The company also continues to align with the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommendations to enhance transparency in climate-related reporting.

Sony said it will continue to reduce its environmental footprint across its supply chain and deliver environmentally conscious products and services, with the aim of meeting GM2030 milestones and achieving its zero-footprint goal by 2050.
