LinkedIn’s latest research has revealed a significant rise in demand for sustainability professionals in the UK, with roles in this sector emerging as some of the fastest-growing positions in the country. According to LinkedIn’s ‘UK Jobs on the Rise 2025’ report, which analysed millions of job starts from January 2022 to July 2024, sustainability roles such as Environmental Officer and Energy Manager are among the top-ranking professions.
Environmental Officers, ranked fifth overall, are responsible for ensuring environmental regulations are met to protect natural resources and public health. This role is most prevalent in sectors such as business consulting, transportation manufacturing, and non-profits. Skills related to environmental compliance, awareness, and management systems are crucial in this role.
Another key position is Energy Manager, ranking 13th. These professionals are focused on creating strategies to optimise energy use and reduce costs, particularly in response to the ongoing energy crisis and regulatory shifts. LinkedIn pointed out that demand for Energy Managers has risen in line with these factors.
In addition to sustainability-focused roles, the report highlights the rapid expansion of the artificial intelligence (AI) sector, with the role of Artificial Intelligence Engineer taking the top spot. This underscores the growing intersection of technology and sustainability in shaping the future of work.
The rising demand for green talent, however, is also creating a skills gap. In September 2024, LinkedIn’s Global Climate Talent Stocktake found that while 13% of UK job roles now require green skills, the available talent pool is not growing at the same rate, with demand increasing by 46%, while supply has grown by just 5.3%. This gap is creating a competitive hiring landscape for businesses looking to recruit skilled environmental professionals.
