thyssenkrupp Steel secures 230 GWh of green power under four PPAs

thyssenkrupp Steel has finalised four power purchase agreements (PPAs) to secure around 230 GWh of renewable electricity, supporting the further decarbonisation of its steel production.

The PPAs have been signed with Quadra Energy, Statkraft, Centrica Energy and Sunnic Lighthouse. The contracts cover a portfolio of onshore wind and solar photovoltaic assets located across Germany.

The renewable electricity will be supplied to the subsidiaries thyssenkrupp Rasselstein, thyssenkrupp Precision Steel and thyssenkrupp Electrical Steel. At least 30% of the electricity supplied to these sites will now come from renewable sources.

Philipp Conze, Chief Financial Officer of thyssenkrupp Steel said, “In concluding the new green power supply contracts, we are advancing our transformation toward CO₂-reduced production. PPAs for electricity are an indispensable component of our decarbonisation strategy.”

The contracted volume is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of around 70,000 households. According to the company, the agreements will avoid more than 70,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year. The electricity is sourced from newly commissioned solar installations and from German onshore wind farms that are no longer supported by state subsidies, supporting their continued commercial operation.

Since the start of the year, green electricity has primarily been supplied to thyssenkrupp Rasselstein and thyssenkrupp Electrical Steel. In addition, thyssenkrupp’s site in Hagen-Hohenlimburg has been sourcing power directly from a neighbouring wind farm since summer 2024 via a dedicated three-kilometre cable. The company said this is the first project in Germany in which a wind farm supplies electricity directly to an industrial facility.

Clarissa Odewald, Chief Executive Officer of thyssenkrupp Rasselstein said, “Sustainability plays a major role for thyssenkrupp Rasselstein and our customers. Thanks to the new green power supply contracts, we can now save over 50,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year.”

Dennis Becher, Head of Energy Management at thyssenkrupp Steel, added, “We are delighted about the partnerships with Quadra Energy, Statkraft, Centrica Energy and Sunnic Lighthouse. The four new Power Purchase Agreements mean we are further expanding our green electricity portfolio.”

thyssenkrupp Steel said its electricity demand is expected to rise significantly as it advances its transformation strategy, including the construction of a hydrogen-capable direct reduction plant. The company said securing additional renewable electricity through PPAs will remain a key element of its efforts to reduce emissions and support the industrial transition.
