TotalEnergies signed an agreement with the American industrial gases group Air Products to supply 70,000 tonnes of clean hydrogen per year to European Refineries. The project will commence in 2030 and will continue for 15 years.
This partnership aims to reduce CO2 emissions by around 700,000 tonnes a year, according to the TotalEnergies press release.
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, said that this is a first-of-its-kind initiative following a call for tenders launched in 2023, and is an important step towards decarbonising the hydrogen used in the company’s refineries.
TotalEnergies launched a tender in September 2023 for the supply of 500,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, destined for its six refineries and two biorefineries in Europe. This will lead to a 40% reduction in net greenhouse gas emissions (scope 1 and 2) by 2030, as compared with 2015.
The partnership between TotalEnergies and Air Products to supply green hydrogen to European refineries is a big step towards reducing CO2 emissions in the oil industry.
