The UAE Ministry of Economy has launched a Green Intellectual Property (IP) roadmap to drive innovation, accelerate technology localisation, and advance projects in the new economy, environmental sustainability, and circular economy. The three-month initiative aims to enhance the UAE’s IP landscape, strengthening its global competitiveness while supporting the country’s transition to a circular economy.
Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy and Chairman of the UAE Circular Economy Council, said the roadmap builds on the country’s vision for a sustainable and knowledge-based economy.
“The UAE has established intellectual property as a key pillar of its national economy. The Green IP roadmap is another step towards increasing awareness of green technology and innovation, providing advanced services and products, and attracting sustainable investments,” he said.
Launched during Innovation Month, the roadmap will be implemented in collaboration with local environmental stakeholders and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). It aims to encourage inventors and businesses to develop sustainable technologies in critical economic sectors.
At a media briefing in Dubai, Abdulla Ahmed Al Saleh, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Economy, highlighted sustainability as a core principle of the UAE’s development strategy. He emphasised that environmental conservation has shaped the country’s economic policies, reinforcing its leadership in eco-friendly initiatives and solutions.
“The Green IP roadmap encourages the use of digital solutions and advanced technologies to develop sustainable products and services. We aim to integrate intellectual property rights into green innovations, collaborating with academia and research centres to protect and promote eco-friendly projects,” he said.
The roadmap aims to strengthen legal protections for patents related to environmental sustainability. One key target is increasing the percentage of patent registrations for sustainable technologies to 8% of all patents filed in the UAE. Patent applications in the country reached 3,622 in 2024, reflecting growing interest in green innovations.
The initiative aligns with the UAE’s strategic goals to enhance its standing in the Global Innovation Index (GII) and provide stronger legal frameworks for intellectual property rights.
