European energy company Uniper has announced Electric Hydrogen as its exclusive partner to design a 200-megawatt (MW) electrolyser for its Green Wilhelmshaven project in Northern Germany. The project, aimed at large-scale green hydrogen production, began preliminary front-end engineering design (pre-FEED) work in October 2024.
The Green Wilhelmshaven initiative features two core components: a green hydrogen electrolyser, to be built on the site of Uniper’s former coal-fired power plant, and an ammonia import terminal located near the region’s first LNG terminal, operated by a Uniper subsidiary. Together, these projects aim to meet a significant portion of Germany’s future green hydrogen demand.
Both facilities will connect to the German hydrogen backbone via pipelines and link to underground storage in northern Germany. The project has been designated as a “Project of Common Interest” (PCI), underscoring its importance in Europe’s energy transition.
Powered by renewable wind energy, the electrolyser will produce zero-carbon green hydrogen for industrial applications, including chemicals, steel, marine, and air transport, supporting the shift to carbon neutrality. Uniper envisions the Green Wilhelmshaven project as a key hub for Germany’s green hydrogen ecosystem.
“We aim to drive the efforts to decarbonise German and European industry. Uniper’s hydrogen project is a cornerstone of our plans to shape the energy transition. We’re excited to begin the pre-FEED work on this project with Electric Hydrogen, in whom we have found a partner who understands our goals and supports our vision. We want to be the most trusted partner for policymakers, industry and society on how to make Europe’s energy supply secure, affordable, and steadily greener,” said Susanne Thöle, Director of Hydrogen for Uniper.
“Uniper is committed to become a leader in low-carbon energy. We’re excited to help them fulfil this mission by bringing our advanced electrolysis technology and low project cost to Wilhelmshaven as their exclusive electrolysis partner. Electric Hydrogen was founded to make the switch from fossil fuels to zero-carbon green hydrogen an economic inevitability. Green Wilhelmshaven is a monumental step toward that goal,” said Raffi Garabedian, CEO of Electric Hydrogen.
