USGBC California partners with Sustaira on contractor sustainability reporting

Sustaira has partnered with the U.S. Green Building Council California to provide a preferred technology solution for the Contractor’s Commitment framework.

Under the arrangement, Sustaira will supply a dedicated digital reporting solution to organisations participating in the Contractor’s Commitment programme, following USGBC-CA’s recent acquisition of the framework. Signatories include major construction firms such as Turner, DPR, Mortenson, Clayco, Swinerton, Consigli and BCCI.

The Contractor’s Commitment framework is designed to track and report environmental and sustainability performance across construction projects and supply chains. Large contractors typically manage multiple job sites and tiers of subcontractors, a structure that has relied heavily on manual data collection and spreadsheet-based reporting, increasing the risk of errors and compliance gaps.

“The scale and complexity of sustainability data in construction has outgrown manual tools,” said Vincent de la Mar, CEO of Sustaira. “The Contractor’s Commitment requires structured, tiered, and site-specific data. Our role is to provide a professional, flexible platform that supports those unique requirements, without forcing contractors into generic workflows that don’t reflect how the industry actually operates.”

USGBC-CA said the partnership would support the expansion of the framework and reduce reporting burdens for participating contractors. “This coming year, we will be ramping up the Contractor’s Commitment to better support contractors in delivering tangible ways to reduce their environmental impacts,” said Ben Stapleton, Executive Director, USGBC-CA. “Partnering with Sustaira as one of our preferred providers offers contractors a more streamlined, customised process that will ideally help them ease the pain points associated with data tracking and reporting.”

The Sustaira platform enables contractors to collect and manage sustainability data across multiple sites and subcontractor tiers using configurable templates and centralised data intake. The system is designed to support site-specific tracking, automate data aggregation, improve data completeness and support ESG-related disclosures.

The Contractor’s Commitment solution was developed with input from Sellen Construction and BuildingGreen. “The development process was truly collaborative,” said Angi Rivera, Director of Sustainability at Sellen Construction. “Sustaira’s flexibility allowed us to meet the framework’s requirements while gaining a more holistic view of our data.”

USGBC-CA said digitising the framework would support wider adoption at state and national levels, building on pilot programmes run with large contractors over the past four years. The move is intended to strengthen links between reporting, training and workforce development, while improving the consistency and reliability of sustainability data collected across construction projects.
