Google has tied up with Berkshire Hathaway electric utility NV Energy to power its data centres in Nevada with advanced geothermal electricity.
The deal would increase the amount of carbon-free geothermal electricity injected into Google’s power grid from 3.5 MW to 115 MW in six years. The partnership will help Google advance toward its goal of running on entirely clean energy by 2030.
The agreement involves Google’s direct input in NV Energy’s power generation resource planning and developing a rate structure, which has been dubbed the Clean Transition Tariff, that Google wants to be replicated elsewhere in the country.
