Canada to invests $5M in first grid modernisation centre

To achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, Canada will need increased grid capacity and green technologies. Minister Ya’ara Saks and Parliamentary Secretary Julie Dabrusin visited the University of Toronto to see the demonstration of Canada’s first Grid Modernisation Centre. Minister Saks announced a $5-million investment, on behalf of Minister Filomena Tassi, to establish the new centre at Downsview.

Led by U of T’s Climate Positive Energy initiative, the centre will serve as a hub for industry stakeholders, including SMEs and municipalities, to develop innovative technologies for the electrical grid. This investment is expected to support up to 120 businesses, aiding their growth and job creation.

This announcement is part of a $10-million Government of Canada investment, including $5 million from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). The funding, provided through NRCan’s Energy Innovation Programme, will help Canada meet its climate goals and transition to a low-carbon economy by supporting clean energy technologies and sustainable job creation in southern Ontario.
