NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd., a subsidiary of the NYK Group, has signed a basic agreement with Kambara Kisen Co., Ltd. of Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, to charter a methanol dual-fuel bulk carrier. The vessel, which is currently under construction at Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in Hiroshima, is slated for delivery in spring 2025. This marks the first methanol-fuelled bulk carrier in the NYK Group’s fleet.
Equipped with a dual-fuel engine, the ship can operate on both methanol and traditional fuel oil. It is designed primarily to use bio-methanol and e-methanol, synthesised from hydrogen sourced from renewable energy and recycled carbon dioxide, aligning with global environmental sustainability goals.
Featuring the largest loading capacity of any Ultramax bulker, the new carrier has a versatile hull that enables it to transport a diverse array of cargoes, including grain and ore. The adoption of methanol as a primary fuel is NYK Group’s dedication to minimising its carbon footprint and spearheading the adoption of innovative, cleaner transportation technologies.
