Tesla to support development of EV charging infrastructure across Malaysia

Tesla has announced a significant partnership with nine Malaysian companies to advance the development of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure across the country. The collaboration was revealed by Malaysia’s Investment, Trade, and Industry Minister, Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, who emphasised the initiative’s role in positioning Malaysia as a key hub for green technology.

During a meeting on the progress and implementation of the Global Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) AP Scheme with the Minister, Tesla reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Malaysia’s local ecosystem. This includes integrating nine local companies into the EV infrastructure development process and partnering with Malaysian universities for knowledge transfer and human capital development.

Minister Tengku Zafrul on his social media platforms post-discussion expressed, “May this joint effort grow, bringing great benefits to our country’s economy, technology, and sustainable energy.”.

To date, Tesla has installed 52 Supercharger units with a capacity of 250KW, 54 Wall Connector AC units, and over 4,500 home chargers across Peninsular Malaysia. Tesla has invested up to US$13.5 million (RM59.1 million) aimed at enhancing the local EV landscape.

Further discussions focused on the potential of battery energy storage technology, which Minister Tengku Zafrul noted, “We also discussed the great potential of battery energy storage technology, which is expected to increase energy efficiency and the stability of Malaysia’s electricity grid.”
