Zelestra signs 10-year PPA to decarbonise Spain’s pharmaceutical sector

Zelestra, a global renewable energy company focused on customer-driven solutions, has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Energize in Spain for approximately 161.4 MWdc of capacity. Energize is a collaborative initiative between 24 global pharmaceutical companies aimed at increasing access to renewable electricity across the industry’s supply chain.

This landmark agreement marks the first joint renewable energy purchase by the Energize cohort, including three sponsors—Takeda Pharmaceuticals International AG, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., and UCB Pharma SA—along with four industry suppliers: Avantor, Organon LLC, Perrigo Pharma International D.A.C., and West Pharmaceutical Services Inc.

The 10-year strategic agreement secures renewable energy supply for the operations of these pharmaceutical companies and their suppliers, representing a major milestone in their collective sustainability and decarbonisation efforts.

Aligned with Zelestra’s commitment to help its clients decarbonise, the PPA ensures that pharmaceutical companies will purchase approximately 305 GWh of renewable electricity annually.

Ivan Nieto, Chief Commercial Officer of Zelestra said, “This agreement marks a significant step towards energy sustainability in the pharmaceutical sector. We are proud to collaborate with these leading companies to provide them with a reliable source of renewable energy, supporting their efforts to meet their environmental goals”.

With this PPA, Zelestra further strengthens its presence in Spain, a key growth market for the company.
