ClassNK awards world’s first certification for ship using green steel

Japan’s Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) has awarded the world’s first “a-EA (GRS)” class notation to the bulk carrier “BRIGHT QUEEN,” operated by NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd., recognising the use of green steel in the vessel’s construction. This certification highlights the growing trend of incorporating green steel—produced with reduced greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions—into ships to lower the overall carbon footprint across the supply chain.

To support these innovations, ClassNK introduced its “Environmental Guidelines,” which establish notations for vessels adopting advanced environmental practices. The “a-EA (GRS)” notation specifically certifies the use of green steel in ship structures and components.

For “BRIGHT QUEEN,” constructed by Higaki Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., ClassNK verified the use of JFE Steel Corporation’s “JGreeX” green steel, which had been third-party certified for GHG emissions reductions, and granted the vessel this notable classification.

ClassNK plans to further promote decarbonisation through its certification services, including verifying the emissions reductions associated with green steel production.
