Climeworks & CapturePoint partner for carbon removal hub in Louisiana

Climeworks, a carbon removal company, has partnered with CapturePoint Solutions LLC to enhance CO₂ capture, transport, and storage at its Southwest Louisiana facility, part of the broader Project Cypress DAC Hub. This collaboration aims to remove up to one million tons of CO₂ annually, contributing significantly to carbon reduction goals in the region.

CapturePoint will oversee the transfer of CO₂ from Climeworks’ Calcasieu Parish DAC facility to the Central Louisiana Regional Carbon Storage Hub (CENLA Hub) in Vernon and Rapides Parishes. As one of the largest onshore deep underground carbon storage sites under development in the U.S., the CENLA Hub will offer secure, permanent storage for millions of tons of CO₂. Climeworks, already recognised for its Orca and Mammoth DAC plants in Iceland, brings this experience to Louisiana, with Mammoth being ten times larger than Orca.

The Project Cypress DAC Hub will progress in two phases, with the first targeting a capacity of 300,000 metric tons of CO₂ annually, followed by a second phase aiming for one million tons. In addition to advancing carbon removal, this project will support local job creation and infrastructure growth in Southwest Louisiana.

Project Cypress has received over $50 million in initial funding from the Department of Energy’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) as part of its Regional DAC Hubs program. This funding could reach up to $550 million, with an additional $51 million from private investments for the first phase.

Tracy Evans, CEO of CapturePoint said, “Climeworks is pioneering commercial scale Direct Air Capture projects, and the team at CapturePoint is excited to ensure that the CO₂ their Project Cypress facility captures from the atmosphere of southwestern Louisiana is permanently secured deep underground in our Central Louisiana Regional Carbon Storage Hub. The uniquely reliable geology of the CENLA Hub creates the potential for one of the safest and largest carbon management sites in the United States, attracting leading-edge companies like Climeworks that are driving the next generation economy of Louisiana.”

Daniel Nathan, Chief Project Development Officer at Climeworks said, “Louisiana is poised to take a leading position in building up the DAC industry here in the United States. Not only does the porous subsurface in the area offer ideal geologic conditions for safe and permanent storage of carbon dioxide, but the state also boasts an experienced workforce with the expertise needed to develop and build large-scale projects like DAC. We’re excited to share the momentum of this next step forward with CapturePoint.”
