Virgin Australia & Qatar Airways partner to advance SAF Initiatives

Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways have announced plans to deepen their strategic partnership, recently signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaborate on a range of sustainability initiatives. This partnership will focus on advancing the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and Low Carbon Aviation Fuel (LCAF), along with enhancing environmental management practices, such as waste and energy management, sustainable procurement, and workforce development in aviation.

The collaboration will prioritise SAF and LCAF certification, production, and uptake in Australia, including potential joint projects to support these objectives. Additionally, the airlines will explore sustainability-related solutions for customers and emphasise the growth of Australia’s aviation workforce through educational and developmental opportunities.

Christian Bennett, Virgin Australia’s Chief Corporate Affairs & Sustainability Officer said, “We look forward to working closely with the Qatar Airways team to broaden the impact of our efforts toward environmentally sustainable and inclusive operations.”

Fathi Atti, Senior Vice President of Aeropolitical & Corporate Affairs at Qatar Airways Group, said, “Driving progress in environmental sustainability is central to Qatar Airways’ mission. We lead the aviation sector in addressing climate change, waste management, and implementing an integrated environmental management system.”
