Alaska Airlines re-launches programme allowing customers to buy SAF credits

Alaska Airlines has reintroduced the programme allowing frequent flyers to achieve elite status by supporting sustainable aviation fuels (SAF). This initiative enables Alaska Mileage Plan members to offset travel-related carbon emissions by purchasing SAF credits, while also earning Elite-Qualifying Miles (EQMs).

Through Alaska’s partnership with software provider Chooose, guests can purchase SAF credits online, earning 500 EQMs per $100 spent (up to 5,000 EQMs) through 31 December 2024, when booking via alaskaair.com. The funds from SAF credits directly support the purchase and use of SAF, providing an environmentally conscious route to meeting year-end mileage targets and securing elite status.

This programme builds on the success of 2023, when Alaska’s Mileage Plan members funded over 500,000 gallons of SAF, with 8.6% of participants maximising contributions to $1,000.

“While SAF is a critical part of the journey to decarbonise aviation, it will take all of us to grow supply and make it commercially viable for widespread use. Alaska has an all-in approach to advance SAF, including engaging our guests in the journey while helping them meet their elite status goals,” said Diana Birkett Rakow, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs and Sustainability at Alaska.
