IHI & A*STAR ISCE² partner to accelerate commercialisation of SAF technology

IHI Corporation, along with its subsidiary IHI Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (collectively “IHI”), has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Singapore’s ASTAR Institute of Sustainability for Chemicals, Energy, and Environment (ASTAR ISCE²) to expedite the commercialisation of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) synthesis technology. The collaboration seeks to scale up SAF production, aligning with the aviation industry’s push towards carbon neutrality.

The partnership builds on joint research efforts initiated in 2022, where IHI and A*STAR ISCE² have made notable progress in developing a high-yield catalyst for liquid hydrocarbon production—a key feedstock for SAF—from the direct reaction of hydrogen and CO₂. A bench test unit, installed in Singapore, has enabled essential process verifications and paves the way for commercial-scale SAF production.

Under this MoU, IHI and A*STAR ISCE² will work together on scaling up SAF synthesis facilities, expediting the ASTM certification required for commercial SAF deployment, and exploring new partnerships across the Asia-Pacific region. The collaboration emphasies the importance of both technological progress and regulatory compliance in bringing SAF to market.
