LEGO Group breaks ground on sustainable innovation campus at global headquarters

LEGO Group’s CEO Niels B. Christiansen and Chief Product and Marketing Officer Julia Goldin have inaugurated construction of a 50,000 sqm Innovation Campus at the company’s headquarters in Billund, Denmark, with sustainability as a key focus. Designed to house 1,700 creative professionals from product marketing, development, gaming, and quality teams—including over 600 designers—the campus will foster collaboration and innovation in one eco-conscious space. It will also feature the world’s largest LEGO elements library, with a collection of approximately 20,000 unique pieces in 70 colours.

The Innovation Campus exemplifies LEGO Group’s commitment to building a world-class, environmentally responsible workspace in Billund, where more than 5,900 employees from around 90 countries contribute to the company’s global vision. CEO Christiansen noted, “I am thrilled to mark the beginning of construction of another new campus as we continue to invest in attractive workplaces for our colleagues around the world. Not only is the building design creative at its core – it is also true to our sustainability ambitions, including our commitment to reducing carbon emissions.”

Sustainability has been a guiding principle throughout the campus design process. CEBRA Architects collaborated with LEGO employees, incorporating input and evolving ideas through consultations over an 18-month period. The building will be structured in six overlapping modules up to four floors, integrating play zones, atriums, and a vibrant PlayWay that connects people and functions, with ample green spaces and maximised natural light to enhance creativity. The entire structure will be built from FSC-certified timber, aiming for a significant reduction in upfront carbon emissions, and is designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification by prioritizing energy efficiency, materials, biodiversity, and water conservation.

The campus, set to open in 2027, is envisioned as a sustainable and inspiring workplace that not only advances LEGO Group’s sustainability goals but also serves as a blueprint for eco-friendly, innovative design in the industry.
