Uniper & Electric Hydrogen partner for 200 MW electrolyser project

European energy company Uniper has announced Electric Hydrogen as its exclusive partner to design a 200-megawatt (MW) electrolyser for its Green Wilhelmshaven project in Northern Germany. The project, aimed at large-scale green hydrogen production, began preliminary front-end engineering design (pre-FEED) work in October 2024.

The Green Wilhelmshaven initiative features two core components: a green hydrogen electrolyser, to be built on the site of Uniper’s former coal-fired power plant, and an ammonia import terminal located near the region’s first LNG terminal, operated by a Uniper subsidiary. Together, these projects aim to meet a significant portion of Germany’s future green hydrogen demand.

Both facilities will connect to the German hydrogen backbone via pipelines and link to underground storage in northern Germany. The project has been designated as a “Project of Common Interest” (PCI), underscoring its importance in Europe’s energy transition.

Powered by renewable wind energy, the electrolyser will produce zero-carbon green hydrogen for industrial applications, including chemicals, steel, marine, and air transport, supporting the shift to carbon neutrality. Uniper envisions the Green Wilhelmshaven project as a key hub for Germany’s green hydrogen ecosystem.
