Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook, announced a new agreement to purchase green energy credits from four large US solar projects. The move supports Meta’s commitment to powering its energy-intensive data centres with 100% clean electricity as its energy demands grow.
The company signed contracts with Chicago-based energy developer Invenergy for a total of 760 megawatts of solar power—enough to supply around 130,000 homes. The projects will be located in Ohio, Texas, New Mexico, and Arkansas, connecting to the grid between 2024 and 2027, according to a joint statement from Meta and Invenergy.
Rather than directly consuming the electricity generated, Meta will receive clean energy credits from the projects, contributing to its renewable energy targets.
“These projects will help us continue our commitment to support all of our operations with 100% clean energy,” said Urvi Parekh, Meta’s head of global energy.
This deal is part of a broader strategy by Meta to meet its growing energy needs sustainably. The company has announced similar agreements with large solar projects, partnered with a geothermal startup, and is exploring proposals from nuclear power developers. The latest partnership underscores Meta’s ongoing efforts to align its operations with its climate goals.
