Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Yusen Logistics Co., Ltd. (YL) have introduced a groundbreaking digital platform for managing greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions. Developed by the Netherlands-based startup 123Carbon B.V., the platform aims to advance decarbonisation in the logistics sector.
The initiative enables NYK and YL to support Scope 3 GHG emission reductions by allocating reductions achieved through alternative fuels across ocean, air, and land transport services. Verified by third-party certification, the platform also issues certificates confirming these reductions.
NYK plays a pivotal role in generating greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions by utilizing biofuels in its bulk shipping operations. These emission reductions are carefully verified by an independent certification body to ensure accuracy and reliability. Once verified, the reductions are allocated to Yusen Logistics (YL) and accompanied by certifications that confirm their environmental value. The first allocation through the digital platform is set to be completed after the necessary third-party verification process.
YL complements NYK’s efforts by procuring GHG emission reductions generated by ocean shipping companies like NYK and airline partners that employ sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Additionally, in land transportation, YL actively contributes to emission reductions by using sustainable fuels derived from renewable materials such as waste cooking oil to power its trucks in various regions. To streamline access to these reductions, YL plans to launch a comprehensive one-stop service on the platform, enabling customers to easily benefit from the environmental advantages of these initiatives.
The platform offers customers the ability to monitor greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction methods and the alternative fuels used to achieve these reductions. Ensuring data security and integrity, blockchain technology is employed to manage and allocate information in a tamper-proof manner. To uphold transparency and reliability, the entire process, from calculating to allocating GHG emission reductions, is independently verified by third-party certification.

NYK has set a goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, as outlined in its “Decarbonisation Story.” The company uses biofuel in car carriers, bulk carriers, and crude oil tankers. YL aims to reduce GHG emissions by 45% by 2030 and achieve full decarbonisation by 2050, focusing on Scope 1 and 2 emissions.
The initiative highlights NYK and YL’s leadership in leveraging innovative solutions to reduce GHG emissions within supply chains. By promoting collaboration across stakeholders, the NYK Group aims to contribute to global sustainability efforts and realize a decarbonized future.
