Standard Chartered Vietnam names first Vietnamese CEO

Standard Chartered Bank Vietnam has appointed Nguyen Thuy Hanh as its new CEO and Head of Banking and Coverage, effective 1 October 2024. Hanh has become the first Vietnamese national to assume this senior leadership position at the bank.

With 30 years of banking experience, Hanh brings a strong combination of local expertise and international banking insights. Since joining Standard Chartered in 1997, she has held several key roles, including Head of Financial Institutions for Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia, Head of International Corporate and Financial Institutions, and Head of Commercial Banking. Most recently, as Head of Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) for Vietnam, she led the CIB division to profitable and sustainable growth, with a focus on the bank’s cross-border strategy.

Hanh will succeed Michele Wee, who significantly contributed to the bank’s growth and enhanced its focus on sustainability, diversity, and inclusion. During her tenure, Michele also collaborated with government bodies to support Vietnam’s target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. She was instrumental in organising the first Standard Chartered Marathon in Hanoi this November.

Patrick Lee, CEO of Singapore and ASEAN at Standard Chartered Bank said, “Vietnam is a dynamic and important market for the region and plays a key role in Standard Chartered’s cross-border strategy. We remain optimistic about its long-term development. Our Vietnam franchise has delivered growth and made huge strides in advancing sustainability and our position as a top international bank over the last 120 years here. I would like to thank Michele for her excellent leadership and outstanding contributions. Together with the local management, Hanh has our fullest support and I look forward to the bank’s continued success in Vietnam under her leadership.”
