Verra & EPİAŞ to launch exchange-based trading of carbon credits

Verra, the leading global standard setter for climate action and sustainable development, has announced a strategic partnership with Türkiye’s energy exchange, EPİAŞ, to facilitate the first-ever exchange-based trading of Verra-certified carbon credits on the EPİAŞ platform.

The CEOs of Verra and EPİAŞ signed a Memorandum of Understanding during Climate Week NYC, outlining the key terms of their collaboration.

This partnership will enable the buying and selling of Verra-certified carbon credits on the EPİAŞ platform, which represent verified reductions and removals of greenhouse gas emissions. By facilitating trade through an exchange, both buyers and sellers will benefit from a regulated, efficient, and transparent marketplace.

In addition to enabling voluntary carbon credit trading, EPİAŞ will leverage its partnership with Verra to organize workshops aimed at enhancing market participants’ understanding of trading.

“This partnership marks a significant step forward in our goal to expand buyers’ access to high-quality carbon credits globally. By integrating Verra-certified credits into EPİAŞ’s established platform, we are aiming to enhance the credibility and transparency of Türkiye’s voluntary carbon market. Through the educational workshops we seek to foster greater understanding of and participation in the market. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this collaboration will have on both the market and broader climate action efforts in Türkiye,” said Mandy Rambharos, CEO, Verra.

EPİAŞ’s CEO Taha Meli Arvas said, “With this agreement, we aim to provide the first exchange-based trading of voluntary carbon credits in the world, at EPİAŞ. This will mean a central counterparty that is connected to registries, that verifies the existence of the credits and seamlessly allows for their trade. This step will increase the product diversity of our environmental markets allowing our market participants access to Verra-certified credits.”

The exchange-based voluntary carbon credit trading on the EPİAŞ platform is expected to begin in the next few weeks.
