Yara has become the first company in Brazil to produce ammonia using renewable biomethane, delivering its initial tonnes of the lower-carbon product to customers. Derived from sugarcane waste, biomethane is a purified biogas that can replace fossil natural gas, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by up to 75%.
This innovation underscores Yara’s commitment to decarbonising food and industrial value chains as it advances toward its goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. “This marks a significant step in building renewable-based value chains across sectors, from food and mining to on- and off-shore transport,” said Marcelo Altieri, President of Yara Brazil.
For agribusiness, the impact is transformative. Yara integrates its lower-carbon fertilizers with agronomic expertise to provide farmers with greater value while opening new markets and revenue streams. In coffee farming alone, the company projects a 40% reduction in the carbon footprint of harvested beans.
