BCG expands carbon removal efforts with 50,250 tonnes CDR purchase

Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has announced the purchase of 50,250 tonnes of certified carbon dioxide removals (CDRs) via ClimeFi, a leading portfolio manager for permanent CDR assets. This acquisition reinforces BCG’s commitment to offset 100% of its emissions through high-quality carbon removal credits by 2030, showcasing its dedication to tackling climate change with innovative solutions.

Marking the second-largest transaction for the firm, this purchase brings BCG’s total durable CDR acquisitions to nearly 200,000 tonnes. According to CDR.fyi, a platform tracking the durable carbon removal market, this positions BCG among the top ten global buyers of durable CDR. The removal credits, slated for delivery within two years, underline the firm’s focus on accelerating climate action in the near term.

BCG’s partnership with ClimeFi enables access to a diverse portfolio of durable carbon removal solutions, along with long-term performance tracking of these projects. The collaboration reflects BCG’s commitment to fostering innovation in carbon removal technologies.

As part of this transaction, BCG has expanded the share of biochar in its portfolio with new projects from Exomad Green and Euthenia Energy. The portfolio also features cutting-edge technologies such as Lithos Carbon, which leverages enhanced rock weathering to sequester CO2 while boosting crop yields; Andes, employing microbial carbon mineralisation on farmlands; O.C.O Technologies, utilising concrete mineralisation to trap CO2 in building materials; and Graphyte, which focuses on subsurface biomass storage.

This diversified approach helps BCG scale multiple carbon removal solutions, creating a balanced portfolio that mitigates project risks and supports complementary technologies.

“BCG is committed to helping innovators in this space, and we are glad to be able to partner with ClimeFi. By continuing to expand the CDR technologies we support, we are not only securing high-quality durable removals to neutralise our emissions, but helping to unlock the potential of these technologies to contribute to global climate targets,” said David Webb, BCG’s Chief Sustainability Officer.

Paolo Piffaretti, CEO of ClimeFi added, “We are delighted to be collaborating with BCG and helping them to expand their carbon removal portfolio via this new series of transactions. BCG continues to demonstrate leadership in driving the CDR market forward and their desire to explore diverse CDR solutions is critical to ensuring the sustainable growth of the market. We greatly appreciate the trust they have given us to build this portfolio and execute transactions with a range of companies on their behalf.”
