SAP launches green ledger for advanced carbon accounting

SAP SE has announced the launch of SAP Green Ledger, a comprehensive carbon accounting solution that integrates seamlessly with its customers’ financial data and ERP systems. Designed as part of SAP’s Sustainability solutions, the SAP Green Ledger enables businesses to allocate carbon emissions to specific economic activities and transactions, enhancing transparency and precision in carbon accounting.

The solution helps organisations track carbon footprints alongside financial performance, establish carbon budgets, benchmark units on environmental and financial metrics, and prepare for sustainability audits. It also supports companies in preparing for sustainability audits and improving supplier-based processes to decrease carbon emissions in the supply chain, with enhanced supplier management capabilities expected in 2025.

“Enormous investments are required to abate CO₂ in order to curb global warming. Besides smart, reliable regulation, accurate data on emissions along the supply chain is paramount to trigger the necessary investment,” said Dominik Asam, CFO and member of the Executive Board of SAP SE. “Only by moving from averages to actuals – audited at reasonable assurance – can freeriding and greenwashing be avoided, thereby protecting such valuable investment and our planet. SAP Green Ledger delivers precisely that.”

SAP Green Ledger builds on SAP’s established ERP systems, enabling companies to align sustainability goals with financial optimisation. The solution offers a scalable platform for compliance with evolving regulations, including the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), EU Emissions Trading System (ETS), and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).

Developed with support from partners Accenture, Deloitte, EY, PwC, and TCS (Tata Consulting Services), SAP Green Ledger was piloted with customers like Covestro, which tested the solution to link emissions data to production processes for greater visibility.

Accenture’s Global Resources Industry Practice Chair, Stephanie Jamison, emphasised the technology’s ability to improve sustainability decision-making and said, “As organisations seek to gain visibility into both the financial and environmental performance of their businesses, SAP Green Ledger can provide the sustainability metrics and insights needed to enhance decision-making that reduces emissions, drives efficiencies and optimises performance.”

Deloitte’s expertise has also shaped the solution, offering precision in carbon measurement and reporting. Jennifer Steinmann, Deloitte Global Sustainability Business leader, said, “SAP Green Ledger offers new levels of precision in carbon accounting for organisations as they track, manage, and report their greenhouse gas emissions. It provides leaders with a holistic view of the costs and benefits of sustainability initiatives, enabling them to make data-driven decisions that can build business resilience.”

Vikram Karakoti, TCS Enterprise Solutions Global Head said, “By embedding carbon data into the enterprise planning process, organisations can unlock previously unexplored areas for growth, transformation, and environmental renewal.”
