DP World, a multinational logistics company, is all set to launch a groundbreaking programme aimed at helping UK cargo importers reduce their carbon emissions. The Carbon Inset Programme, which will run from 1 January 2025 for six months, will be trialled at DP World’s terminals in London Gateway and Southampton.
The initiative offers importers 50kg of CO2e carbon credits for every loaded import container handled through DP World’s UK facilities. These quarterly credits reflect efforts by participating businesses to cut indirect emissions within their supply chains.
Unlike traditional carbon offset credits, which balance emissions via external projects, inset credits represent tangible reductions in emissions within a company’s operations. DP World generates these credits through its subsidiary, Unifeeder, which uses progressively lower-carbon fuels across Northern Europe. Verified credits are pooled and made available to registered importers.
John Trenchard, Vice President of Commercial and Supply Chain at DP World in the UK said, “At DP World, we are constantly seeking ways to reduce carbon emissions across our customers’ supply chains. Insetting carbon emissions is a transparent, direct, and pragmatic approach with an immediate, measurable impact for our customers. By providing easy access to an independently certified inset programme, we aim to raise awareness and encourage the adoption of more sustainable practices.”
He added, “By participating in this world-first trial, import cargo owners can actively contribute to global decarbonisation efforts while aligning with their own sustainability goals.”
The programme provides businesses with a measurable and transparent way to reduce supply chain emissions while showcasing their sustainability initiatives to customers. This new initiative follows the success of DP World’s Modal Shift Programme, which cut over 17,000 tonnes of emissions in its first year and earned the ‘Transport and Mobility Project of the Year’ award at the edie Net Zero Awards in November.
It is estimated that even with just half the import volume at DP World’s UK terminals participating, the initiative could replace over 11000 tonnes of harmful fossil fuels and reuse 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. Businesses interested in joining the trial are encouraged to register before 31 December 2024 to access free carbon inset credits.
