The AccountAbility AA1000 Standards Board has announced plans to revise its widely used Stakeholder Engagement Standard (AA1000SES), with a new version scheduled for release in 2027. An open call has been issued for stakeholders to join the Working Group that will lead the revision process.
The updated standard will aim to reflect the evolving landscape of stakeholder engagement, shaped by growing transparency demands, global sustainability disclosures, and increasing scrutiny from investors and regulators. The revision process will formally begin in May 2025, guided by a Terms of Reference developed by the Board.
The Working Group will be composed of individuals selected for their expertise in sustainability, corporate responsibility, and standards development. AccountAbility, which acts as the steward of the AA1000 Series of Standards, will provide technical and administrative support throughout the process.
The current AA1000SES, recognised globally as a benchmark for high-quality stakeholder engagement, provides organisations with a structured approach to identify, prioritise, and respond to stakeholder concerns. The revised version is expected to align more closely with contemporary sustainability frameworks, local and international guidelines, and non-financial regulatory requirements.
In a statement, AccountAbility highlighted that the revision is being undertaken at a pivotal moment for stakeholder engagement, as organisations worldwide seek to balance competing stakeholder interests while ensuring alignment with long-term strategic goals.
Applications to join the Working Group must be submitted by 2 May 2025. Interested candidates are invited to send a résumé and a brief statement outlining their interest, relevant experience, and availability. The call for participation is open to professionals from various sectors, including industry, sustainability, law, consulting, finance, and regulation.
The AA1000SES is the most widely applied standard of its kind and serves as a foundational tool for organisations integrating stakeholder perspectives into governance, strategy, and operations.
