AGA advances development of green ammonia plant in Australia

Green ammonia

Allied Green Ammonia (AGA) is moving forward with its green ammonia plant in Australia’s Northern Territory, aiming to produce 958,500 tonnes annually. ABB, a global specialist in electrification and automation, is providing technological support to assist in the plant’s engineering and design. The collaboration is expected to help AGA finalise its Final Investment Decision (FID) on an accelerated timeline.

The facility will be powered by a 4.75GW solar farm, supplying energy to a 3GW hydrogen electrolysis plant and the downstream green ammonia production unit. The partnership with ABB will focus on developing a scalable electrical microgrid solution, integrating DC and AC switchgear with digital solutions.

Key elements include:

  • Digital switchgear for DC and AC power distribution
  • Pre-engineered eHouse and skid solutions to support the plant’s infrastructure
  • Integrated digital monitoring to optimise efficiency and reliability
  • Modular and scalable designs to accommodate future expansion

The electrical and automation approach is designed to improve system performance, cost predictability, and operational efficiency.

The project is part of broader efforts to support industrial decarbonisation and expand Australia’s hydrogen and ammonia economy. ABB’s integrated energy solutions will facilitate:

  • Optimisation of system performance
  • Reduced carbon footprint
  • Improved asset uptime and energy efficiency

Alfred Benedict, Chairman and Managing Director of Allied Green Ammonia, stated, “We are pleased to sign this Memorandum of Understanding with ABB to integrate their technology and expertise into the project. This collaboration contributes to the development of a green ammonia economy in the Northern Territory.”

The Final Investment Decision (FID) is set for completion on an accelerated schedule. The project is expected to play a role in meeting net-zero targets, expanding renewable ammonia production, and supporting clean fuel initiatives.
