Air Liquide expands low-carbon power sourcing via PPAs

Air Liquide said it has expanded its voluntary low-carbon electricity sourcing programme, a key element of its Climate Transition Plan, with new long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) taking effect in 2025.

The company said multi-year PPAs totalling around 3 terawatt hours (TWh) per year began during the year, supporting its longer-term decarbonisation trajectory. The programme has focused on regions with carbon-intensive power grids, including China and South Africa, where emission reduction potential is higher. In 2025, Air Liquide also signed its first PPAs in India, extending the approach to a new geography with a high-carbon electricity mix.

Since 2020, Air Liquide has signed PPAs expected to reduce emissions by a combined 3.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year once fully ramped up by 2027. The company said the increased use of low-carbon electricity also enables it to supply customers with gases that have a lower carbon footprint, supporting their decarbonisation efforts.

According to Air Liquide, more than 40% of its total purchased electricity now comes from low-carbon sources. The company said large-scale sourcing of low-carbon power is one of three main elements of its decarbonisation roadmap, alongside measures to improve asset energy efficiency and the use of carbon capture and storage.

The electricity sourcing strategy is being complemented by the electrification of remaining non-electrified air separation units (ASUs). Air Liquide cited the electrification of its Shaanxi ASU, announced in December 2025, which together with low-carbon electricity sourcing is expected to reduce group emissions by up to 550,000 tonnes per year.

Diana Schillag, a member of Air Liquide’s Executive Committee responsible for sustainable development, said the programme was aimed at securing additional low-carbon capacity in regions where the group operates and maximising emissions reductions, particularly in carbon-intensive countries.
