Tech giant Amazon and Skyborn Renewables have announced the signing of a landmark 600-megawatt (MW) Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to supply carbon-free electricity from the upcoming Gennaker offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea. The deal represents the largest single corporate PPA ever recorded in Germany.
Amazon’s long-term commitment provides Skyborn with the financial certainty required to advance construction on Gennaker. Once complete, the project will add up to 976.5 MW of new offshore wind capacity to the national grid, accelerating Germany’s energy transition and bolstering its domestic supply of clean power.
Located approximately 15 kilometres north of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Gennaker is set to become the largest offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea. Skyborn secured the construction permit for the project in December 2025. Featuring 63 state-of-the-art 15 MW turbines, the wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than one million German households annually.
Construction is scheduled to begin following Skyborn’s financial close in the summer of 2026, with full operations expected toward the end of 2028. The development supports Germany’s national target of achieving 30 gigawatts (GW) of installed offshore wind capacity by 2030.
The project represents a massive €3 billion investment into the economy of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In a boost to the local supply chain, the monopile foundations will be manufactured by German specialist firm EEW Special Pipe Constructions GmbH (EEW SPC) at its facility in Rostock, located just 40 kilometres from the site. The contract will help secure jobs at the facility, which currently employs 1,000 people.
Manuela Schwesig, Minister-President of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, highlighted the regional significance of the deal: “Gennaker is the largest energy investment ever made in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The power purchase agreement between Skyborn Renewables and Amazon demonstrates that major corporations are investing in wind power from our state, creating jobs and long-term value in the region.”
The agreement stands as Amazon’s largest single carbon-free energy deal in Germany to date. It expands Amazon’s German renewable energy portfolio to 12 projects with a combined capacity exceeding 1.3 GW, capable of powering more than 1.8 million homes annually upon full operation.
As Europe’s largest corporate buyer of renewable energy, Amazon co-founded The Climate Pledge in 2019, targeting net-zero carbon operations by 2040. Rocco Bräuniger, Country Manager for Amazon Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, noted that public-private collaboration is vital to the energy transition, adding that the deal enhances Germany’s energy security while supporting local employment.
Adam Thomsen, Chief Development Officer of Skyborn Renewables, described the partnership as a defining milestone, stating that Gennaker serves as a blueprint for delivering large-scale offshore wind in a reliable and scalable manner.
