7 new projects
Amazon.com Inc has announced 17 new solar and wind power projects in Spain, with a combined capacity exceeding 870 MW, along with its first power purchase agreement (PPA) in Portugal. The expansion reinforces Amazon’s position as the world’s largest corporate buyer of renewable energy.
The Spanish projects, comprising both on-site and off-site facilities, will be spread across the regions of Aragon, Andalusia, Castile and León, Catalonia, and Extremadura. Some of these were previously disclosed in February, when the US e-commerce and technology giant signed PPAs for 476 MW of renewable capacity in Iberia with Spanish utility Iberdrola SA. Among them is a deal to off-take power from Iberdrola’s 212-MW Ciudad Rodrigo solar project in Salamanca.
In Portugal, Amazon’s first PPA will see it procure 219 MW from the 274-MW Tâmega wind complex, also developed by Iberdrola. The complex, which consists of two wind farms, will be located adjacent to Iberdrola’s Tâmega pumped-storage hydroelectric plant. The setup will enable wind energy to be used for water pumping, which can later be released to generate electricity. Construction of the wind farms is expected to commence in 2025.
While Amazon has not disclosed the developers behind its other Spanish projects, the company stated that it has now backed a total of 94 solar and wind farms in Spain, with a cumulative capacity exceeding 3.7 GW. These efforts align with Amazon’s goal of achieving 100% renewable energy across its operations.
“At Amazon, we are committed to providing the necessary infrastructure and services to our customers while continuing to power our operations more sustainably,” said Lindsay McQuade, Director of Energy at Amazon EMEA.
