Amazon and Iberdrola expand renewable energy partnership with 476 MW of new PPAs

Amazon and Iberdrola have expanded their global renewable energy partnership, securing an additional 476 megawatts (MW) of power purchase agreements (PPAs) across five countries. The latest agreements mark Amazon’s first PPA in Portugal and further investments in Spain, reinforcing efforts to transition towards clean energy sources and support net-zero carbon targets.

Under the new agreements, Amazon has secured 219 MW from Portugal’s Tâmega Wind Complex, the country’s largest wind farm, set to begin construction in early 2025. In Spain, two large-scale PPAs for solar and wind energy have been finalised, totalling 257 MW. Combined, these projects will generate an estimated 1,093 GWh of carbon-free electricity annually, sufficient to power approximately 300,000 households.

The latest agreement builds on a strategic partnership established in 2022, covering both renewable energy and cloud services. With these new PPAs, Amazon has now contracted more than 66,000 GWh of renewable energy from Iberdrola worldwide, significantly contributing to its sustainability goals.

In a parallel development, Iberdrola has designated Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its preferred cloud provider for generative artificial intelligence (AI) workloads. The collaboration aims to enhance efficiency across Iberdrola’s operations, including optimising wind farm layouts and improving grid connectivity for new energy supply points. Iberdrola is also employing AWS High Performance Computing (HPC) to refine weather forecasting models for its global wind farm network.

In Portugal, Amazon has secured 219 MW from the Tâmega Wind Complex, a hybrid project designed to integrate with the existing hydroelectric infrastructure. The €350 million investment is expected to generate clean energy for 128,000 households and create over 700 jobs during peak construction.

In Spain, Amazon will purchase 212 MW from the Ciudad Rodrigo solar PV plant in Salamanca, which will supply energy equivalent to 150,000 homes. As part of the initiative, Iberdrola has committed to restoring the Plaza Amayuelas town square for community use. Amazon has also secured 45 MW from the Valdemoro wind farm in Burgos, which will provide power to approximately 48,000 households. The project will create 145 construction jobs, with 40% sourced from local contractors.

The agreement reinforces Amazon’s goal to match its electricity consumption with 100% renewable energy, as part of its commitment to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. According to BloombergNEF, Amazon remains the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy globally for the fifth consecutive year.

Meanwhile, Iberdrola has been recognised as Europe’s leading PPA provider for the second consecutive year, as reported in the Pexapark Renewables Market Outlook 2025.

Aitor Moso Raigoso, Executive Vice President, Customer Business, Iberdrola stated, “With Amazon, we have a partnership that aligns with our mission to advance sustainable energy and accelerate the global transition to renewables. Iberdrola’s extensive renewables portfolio allows us to expand such collaborations, supporting decarbonisation efforts and helping businesses achieve their climate goals.”

Lindsay McQuade, Director of Energy for EMEA at Amazon added, “Amazon is committed to advancing the shift towards carbon-free energy, both in support of our Climate Pledge targets and to aid Europe’s transition to sustainable power. Our collaboration with Iberdrola leverages AWS technology to drive efficiency, innovation, and faster progress toward shared objectives.”
