Arca announces partnerships to advance carbon removal at Western Australian mine sites

Arca, a mineral carbonation technology company, has announced new partnerships to accelerate carbon removal efforts at mining operations across Western Australia.

The company has joined the Development Partner Institute (DPI) as an Associate Partner, ensuring that Traditional Owners and stakeholders are involved from the outset in shaping future carbon removal initiatives. Arca has also partnered with the Climate Recovery Institute, a not-for-profit organisation working with governments, industry, and communities to develop a long-term carbon removal sector in Australia.

In addition, Arca is collaborating with Wyloo and a Western Australian gold producer to explore carbon removal opportunities at their mining sites. The initiative will assess how existing tailings streams can be used to capture and store atmospheric CO₂.

Paul Needham, CEO of Arca, highlighted the significance of these partnerships, “Carbon mineralisation has the potential to play a crucial role in decarbonising the mining industry. This is an important step in supporting Australia’s climate commitments.”

Florence Drummond, Executive Director of DPI, noted the alignment between Indigenous principles of environmental stewardship and Arca’s approach. “We look forward to facilitating dialogues that reinforce the mining sector’s role as a partner in sustainable development,” she said.

Arca has also secured US$8 million in funding from investors, including Australian venture capital firms Side Stage Ventures and Saniel Ventures, to further develop its carbon mineralisation technology.

The announcement coincides with the Team Canada Trade Mission (TCTM), led by Canada’s Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade, and Economic Development, Mary Ng. The mission highlights the shared interest of Australia and Canada in advancing climate technology.

Minister Ng described the collaboration as a strong example of Canadian and Australian cooperation, emphasising the role of technical, business, and social expertise in supporting economic growth in both countries.

Western Australia’s mineral resources provide significant potential for large-scale carbon mineralisation, a process recognised in recent policy initiatives, including Premier Roger Cook’s Carbon Capture Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) Action Plan and the Minerals Research Institute of WA’s mineral carbonation roadmap.

Arca’s technology accelerates natural geochemical processes, converting atmospheric CO₂ into stable carbonate minerals using mine waste. By integrating with existing industrial operations, the approach offers mining companies a practical route towards decarbonisation.
