Barclays appoints Paul Williams as Global Head of Operational Sustainability

Barclays has appointed Paul Williams as its new Global Head of Operational Sustainability, expanding the banking group’s internal environmental stewardship and operational decarbonisation capabilities.

In his new role, Williams will lead Barclays’ sustainable operations strategy, overseeing the integration of sustainability practices across global procurement, real estate assets, technology infrastructure, and broader business operations. He succeeds Anna Long, who had been holding the position alongside her existing duties in recent months.

Williams joins Barclays following a tenure at Deutsche Bank, where he led sustainable procurement initiatives and worked across the bank’s risk, legal, and sustainability divisions to embed environmental frameworks within supplier networks and corporate supply chains.

Commenting on his appointment, Williams highlighted his intention to collaborate across Barclays’ business units to turn corporate sustainability targets into practical operational frameworks across the bank’s global footprint.

The appointment comes as major European financial institutions continue to strengthen internal operational sustainability standards, focusing on Scope 1, Scope 2, and operational Scope 3 emissions alongside their commercial financing activities.
