BHP and BYD to explore electrification of mining equipment

BHP has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with FinDreams Battery Co., Ltd. (FDB), a subsidiary of Chinese battery manufacturer BYD Group, to jointly explore electrification solutions for the mining sector.

The collaboration will focus on the potential deployment of powertrain battery systems for heavy mining equipment and locomotives, alongside supporting flash-charging infrastructure. The companies will also examine the use of BYD’s commercial and light electric vehicles within BHP’s mining operations as part of its efforts to reduce diesel dependency.

The initiative forms part of BHP’s strategy to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions from its operated assets, with a long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

FDB, through parent company BYD, brings experience in battery manufacturing, electric vehicle systems, and energy storage technologies. The partnership will also explore broader applications such as battery recycling and stationary energy storage.

The MoU follows a broader industry trend toward electrification and decarbonisation in mining, with companies seeking to reduce their environmental footprint through emerging technologies and alternative energy sources.

No specific timelines or deployment plans have been disclosed.
