British Airways signs multi-year deal with EcoCeres for SAF

British Airways has signed a multi-year agreement with renewable fuels specialist EcoCeres, Inc. to supply sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), in a move aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of its operations. The partnership is expected to cut lifecycle carbon emissions by approximately 400,000 metric tonnes—equivalent to the emissions from around 240,000 return economy-class flights between London and New York.

Under the terms of the agreement, EcoCeres will supply SAF derived entirely from waste-based biomass feedstocks, including used cooking oil. This type of fuel has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel.

The deal supports British Airways’ commitment to power 10% of its flights with SAF by 2030, in line with the UK Government’s SAF mandate. In 2024, SAF accounted for 2.7% of the airline’s total fuel use, contributing to a 13% reduction in carbon intensity since 2019.

EcoCeres CEO Matti Lievonen said: “We are proud to partner with British Airways in this strategic agreement to jointly tackle greenhouse gas emissions in aviation. Our commitment to sustainability is unwavering, and this partnership exemplifies our dedication to providing innovative fuel solutions that support the industry’s climate goals.”

Carrie Harris, Director of Sustainability at British Airways, welcomed the agreement, saying: “Sustainable aviation fuel is a critical pillar of our BA Better World strategy. This new partnership with EcoCeres is another step forward on our path to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.”
